OULANKA NATIONAL PARK
In the afternoon of 6th June 2018 the Summer School will travel to one of the most spectacular National Parks in Europe. The location close to the Russian border in the eastern Finland, an ecosystem with rare species and the astonishing landscape will give you everlasting memories to share with your friends and family.
The comfortable drive to the location with local Nevakivi Ltd Coach Company and coffee breaks makes the travel easy. Accomodation in Oulanka will be at the Biological Research Center/Wilderness Hotel with basic level four-person rooms and, if needed, also in Log Cottages nearby. There is also a possibility to experience Finnish Sauna in the research center with the possibility to swim in the River Oulanka. During the stay you can also sit in a Goahti, a traditional Sami dwelling, and, maybe, cook some blazed salmon inside. The distance to the border zone is approx. ten kilometres from the station.
Oulanka National Park
"Oulanka National Park is part of the Europe's wild network of Pan Parks, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Europe's natural habitats and fragile ecosystems. To be certified for this conservation organisation, a park has to have at least 100 sqkm of untouched nature at its core, where flora and fauna still thrive without man’s interference. The wilderness areas also have to be managed in a sustainable manner when it comes to conservation, tourism and human developments." BBC: http://www.bbc.com/travel/
"In the rugged landscape of the Karhunkierros Trail, you will observe the power of water. The many trail options and hanging bridges of the Oulanka National Park will take you to the most impressive waterfalls in Finland. The jumps of wild brown trout, the dives of European dippers, the unlimited beauty of the aapa mires and the lovely calypso will challenge even the experienced nature photographer.
Nature doesn't recognise any state boundaries: the vast wilderness of the Paanajärvi National Park is to be found on the Russian side of the border". http://www.nationalparks.fi/oulankanp
Pudasjärvi Log Campus
"In 2012, Pudasjärvi, a town surrounded by string fens and wilderness, decided to bring its schools and community college to one location and have a new log-structured campus built to house them. One aim in the use of timber was to prevent moisture and indoor air quality problems similar to those that the school buildings had experienced before. It was also an eco-friendly choice and provided work for a local log supplier." http://www.woodarchitecture.fi/projects/pudasjarvi-log-campus
